USA Weightlifting is the US's governing body for the Olympic sport of Weightlifting, under the International Weightlifting Federation. From 2014-2019, the level of weightlifting has increased substantially in the United States, and USAW has increased the qualifying toal to Nationals in order to keep the total number of lifters from growing unmanageable. However, some unlikely states have emerged as strong weightlifting states over the years. There has also been an emergence of remote athletes belonging to teams not in their geographic area.
This map shows the number of lifters per million of the population of each state that attended USA Weightlifting nationals for the years 2014-2019.
Data Sources
Method
The data was downloaded from the sources below, compiled into one dataset, and analyzed to
calculate the percentage, by finding the number of lifters per state (from USA Weightlifting), and the estimated population for each year
(from the Census Bureau). The final dataset was loaded into this page as a
csv file.
